The project is divided into four stages, with a total investment of approximately US $ 3.55 billion, is a project with a leading role in the economic zone in Van Phong Bay.

In the startup phase (starting construction 10/2009), building two 690 m long berth for container ships of 6,000 TEU carrying capacity, meet throughput 710,000 TEU / year with the system loading and unloading equipment, warehousing, technical infrastructure ... uniform, international standards. Total investment this period about 200 million US dollars, the construction period is 20 months for the Ministry of Transport Maritime Corporation Vietnam as an investor. However, after a period of construction, the Corporation Vietnam Maritime saw this as transshipment port to receive the largest ships in the world to build bridges of ships of 6,000 TEU will not create a competitive advantage. Therefore, the Corporation Vietnam Maritime has permission to readjust technical design launch two berths with a length up to 850 m, in order to receive vessels of 9,000 TEU.

After the first two berths, the Corporation Vietnam Maritime plans to build the terminal can receive ships from 12000-15000 TEU with a total investment capital increase 15-20% from baseline. At the meeting, Minister Dinh La Thang said, if the Khanh Hoa province with Vietnam Maritime Administration to find foreign investors to invest in international transit port in Van Phong is fully supportive MOT.

Ministers requested the Vietnam Maritime Corporation in collaboration with the provinces of Khanh Hoa in calling for foreign investment, in order to ensure sufficient funding to meet the schedule and make the most efficient from the advantages of deep water Van Phong Bay, the only place to be arranged as an international transshipment port; creating a breakthrough for the development of Vietnam's seaport, contributing to the economic - social central region developed rapidly and gradually realize the Vietnam Maritime Strategy.
